At the Saltonstall Farm, we believe that allowing people to be part of their own turkey processing is the most ethical way to be a meat eater for your Thanksgiving meal. Whether you care about animal rights, workers rights, climate change, local food, healthy food, or tasty food (did we give you enough reasons yet?)... participating in the processing of your meat gives you an insight into what it *really* takes to eat animals.
Customers purchase their live turkey and we provide complimentary processing facilities. We process the turkeys in the most humane way possible and invite participants to thank their turkey for its life before it dies. While we do the killing stroke, participants hold the turkey in the cone and then are shown how to pluck and gut their own turkey. No experience required!
If you'd like to participate in our annual Turkey Processing Day, please fill out this interest form by the end of April. We're asking that you pay a non-refundable $50 deposit up front to secure your turkey. $20 of the deposit covers the processing costs for your bird, and the remaining $30 will go toward the final cost of your bird. We'll supply the all of the slaughter equipment, hot coffee, turkey chili, music, and cozy barn to hang out in as you prepare to slaughter your very own bird.
The final cost of your turkey is $5 per-processed-pound on top of the $50 deposit. We're expecting the birds to range from 20-30 pounds... GIANT!!
As usual, we're looking for generous people to help provide turkeys to low income families. If you pitch in $100, we'll match you and provide the same turkey experience for a family that otherwise might not be able to participate in this unique community.
